Magic IN OUr TECHNOLOGIES

Master’s Dissertation

Campus Fonderie de L’Image (France) - 2015

We seem to be living in a world of pure science, where technology is synonym to rationality. Everything surrounding us seems explained. Yet we have a passion for fantasy, and its cousin science-fiction, in films, literature and video games, which we consume in great quantities. We are surrounded by magical events and futuristic.

However, some of our real creations seem to be magical themselves: digital objects. They transform our bodies, communicate with each other, and even sometimes misbehave.

We seem to have a strange relationship with this type of device. On the one hand we see them as technological objects, and thus created by the rationality of science, on the other we treat them like magical tools. Indeed, we create rituals around them, give them souls and allow them to bring us a sense of wonder.

Join us as we undertake a trip into the world of magical thought, where we will explore this ambivalent relationship. We may just discover how and to what extent magic still exists in our thoughts surrounding digital objects.

PARISIAN URBAN SCREENS AND THEIR CHALLENGES

Master’s Article

Campus Fonderie de L’Image (France) - 2014

In most developed countries, digital technology has become ubiquitous in the everyday life of citizens. Television, computers, smartphones, tablets: we use at least one a day, or even more.

This technology has undergone a dazzling evolution in recent decades. Previously, the screen was only a medium for distributing images and information. With emerging technologies, they have also become receptors.

These screens are not only available in small formats. We can find them in city streets in developed countries, in varying quantities, in the form of digital displays, either passive or reactive to an interaction with the passer-by.

Taking the example of London and Paris, being both the most visited capitals in the world, but with very different reactions to the use of street screens, we will study their difference reactions both by the onlookers and the announcers.

HOW ARE SCREENS AFFECTING OUR PERCEPTIONS OF INTERACTIONS?

Bachelor’s Dissertation

University for the Creative Arts (England) - 2009

The screen and the search for representation is a story that began with Man’s search for reflection of himself and the world. With the search, he invented the support that later will be classified as a screen.

Today, screens have moved on to different objects with different technologies, proliferating around the globe in different forms, shapes and materials. It seems one cannot escape them as they have now become part of everyday life.

With such an impact on the world, one may wonder how Man’s perceptions of himself and his environment have changed due to screens.
